The effect of diaphragm on lithium battery | Aro Santoprene diaphragm

The main components of a lithium battery are positive and negative electrodes, a separator, an organic electrolyte and a battery casing. Among these structures, the diaphragm is one of the key inner components.

The diaphragm serves two main functions. The first function is to act as an insulating layer. The existence of the insulating layer can effectively prevent the internal short circuit of the lithium battery caused by the contact between the positive and negative electrodes.

The second function is to act as a semi-permeable layer. The semi-permeable layer can prevent the passage of larger molecules and allow small-volume charged ions to pass. This can increase the concentration difference near the positive and negative electrodes, which is conducive to the diffusion of ions, thereby increasing lithium The storage efficiency of the battery.

In addition to being useful for chemical reactions inside lithium batteries, separators are also useful for external physical reactions. For example, when a lithium battery is squeezed or punctured by an external hard object, it is equivalent to providing an extra layer of insurance for the lithium battery. Under normal circumstances, it can be ensured that the lithium battery pack will only swell and not explode when it is impacted by a foreign object.
